Based on the book of the same name, the inspiring, humorous, and very well produced Hollywood film Jesus Revolution follows some of the key figures of the Jesus movement in 1960’s California.
A conservative pastor, Chuck Smith, of a small and dying Church named Calvary Chapel, is introduced to Lonnie Frisbee, an evangelist hippie hitchhiker that his daughter picked up and brought home, and who subsequently challenges Chuck’s conservative views of both hippies and Christians, and sparks one of the biggest revival movements in American Christian history.
Lonnie introduces Chuck to a newly formed band called Love Song and many more young hippies, which result in the Calvary Church becoming a large thriving Church and wider ministry that evangelises hippies and other young people.
The movement becomes so large that services needed to be held in tents. The young attendees became known as ‘Jesus Freaks’, and massive numbers of youth came to Christ, group baptisms, were held in the Pacific Ocean, most notably and famously at a place called ‘Pirates Cove’.
Another notable figure in the film, Greg Laurie, a youth who comes to know God through Calvary Chapel and the Jesus movement, goes on to lead one of the largest and most influential Churches in California Harvest Christian Fellowship, as well as co-write the book Jesus Revolution.
